Thursday Thought #SelamDebs

What does freedom mean? We all want freedom. Many people think we are entitled to freedom. But what happens when the person fighting for freedom takes freedom away from someone else? At what point is one person’s freedom more important than another person’s freedom? It seems pretty hypocritical (and atrocious) to me that someone fighting for freedom would utter death threats against someone else who only wants to be included in having freedom too. At what point is the benefit of society—the greater good—more important than the freedom of an individual?  If freedom allows everyone to do what they want without taking anyone else into consideration, how is that different than anarchy? What level of freedom is acceptable for all?

Equity feels like oppression to those who benefit from the oppression and marginalization of others. ~Selam Debs
