born: (past participle of the verb ‘to bear’) was brought from the womb; resulted from; having qualities from birth (e.g. I am Canadian born.)
borne: (past participle of the verb ‘to bear’) given birth to; carried; endured;
produced; brought about
Used in all cases when followed by ‘by’.
Both “born” and “borne” can be used in relation to giving birth to a living being. The difference is based on whether it is the subject or the object of the sentence who is being born.
Examples:
My sister was born in Idaho. (The subject of the sentence is being born.)
Maria has borne nine children. (The object of the sentence is being born.)
